Oregon Translation Translator Application Process

Welcome to Oregon Translation and (sister company) Edinburgh Translation. We are pleased that you would like to join our team. Our goal is to build a professional and respectful, long-term relationship between our company and each of our translators, in order to benefit all of us, as well as all of Oregon Translation's customers. In view of this goal, we would like to outline some basic and mutual expectations.

As a translator, you should expect Oregon Translation to:

  • Be helpful and responsive;

  • Pay your invoices in a timely fashion;

  • Provide clear instructions for each project, including: timelines, deliverables, remuneration, and access to any background materials (e.g., glossaries, memories, client-specific terminology, previous related projects);

  • Set reasonable timelines for delivery, to the extent possible;

  • Treat you with the professional courtesy you deserve.

Oregon Translation expects its translators to:

  • Deliver assignments according to the agreed-upon schedule;

  • Inform us immediately if you cannot meet your deadline or encounter problems. This way we can work together to find a solution;

  • Notify the PM of cultural clashes and of incomplete or erroneous source materials;

  • Only accept assignments for which you feel suitably qualified and available. In other words, be honest about your limitations. It is far better to decline a job because you are not familiar with the terminology than to accept the job and write a poor translation. Declining a few jobs does not mean we will not contact you again about a translation in a different field - indeed, the opposite is often true;

  • Review your own translation for typos, spelling errors, omissions, and mistranslations;

  • Treat our staff with the professional courtesy we deserve;

  • Use accurate and consistent terminology;

  • When in doubt, ask questions rather than make assumptions.

The next page contains a questionnaire about your services and qualifications. We use the information you provide in this questionnaire to match you to new assignments, so please be sure your responses are as accurate and thoughtful as possible. Your information will only be made available to the combined staff of Oregon Translation and Edinburgh Translation.
